Ycamp Dec 09 was definitely a life-changing experience to a lot of us. :)
Was still wondering why was i in the camp on thu and fri, when i had to take care of a wheelchair-bounded beneficiary. i think his case is 小儿麻痹, he has no strength in his legs. his legs are always bent and apparently when he straightens, he will feel pain. haha i guess its more xiong than army. Each time my bene wants to go toilet, junlin and i will definitely be panting after the work's done and it takes ard 20 mins just to help him to toilet. For bathing, it normally takes 1 hr and my buddy and i will be panting for the 1 hour too. I was wondering y was my bene the only wheelchair-bounded and not the fun/funny MINDS benes that my other group members dun nid to spend alot of time taking care of and was regretting coming to the camp.
Only at the end of the camp, i realised why fate planned it this way.
Things started changing dramatically on sat, (i guess its due to melvin and peilin's comments made on fri debrief), everyone interacted more with each other, helped out with each other and we were bonded instantly.
ULTRAMAN ROCKS!
it was the only community where i no doubt know i can depend on anyone in my group to help. One most touching thing that i realised is, all of us really have a kind heart, evidently shown by the bbbh boys. in fact im glad that most of them have become so matured and understanding!
Lots of touching and inspiring moments.
Was really inspired by kangli when he said that he wanted to climb the rock wall. This was his sixth ycamp and for the past 5, he had been doing artwork with the other wheelchair-bound benees while all the others are doing the high elements. Didnt really feel anything initially, until he started climbing.
It was definitely not a great achievement from a normal people's perspective. I personally can finish climbing in less than 5 mins. but was really really inspired by kangli, when all his strength is from only his both hands, from all the help by belayers and the 4 able-bodied pple pushing him up and when he crossed the 1st red line, which is ard 1.5m above ground. When he came down, something just came to me and I shouted the G double O D J O B cheer with all my voice. I will never forget the scene, the perserverence and the mental strength kangli exhibited. ;)
read junlin's reflections of the camp(3 pages long) and felt this camp deserved a long long entry in my stagnant blog.
a lot alot of reflections from this camp:
1) I have become a PRO in handling wheelchairs. ;) turning a wheelchair 360 degrees on the spot, going up kerb, reversing are nothing to me.
2) I have found out that alot of RJC ACJC people are not ang moh pai!
3) kind people really look attractive :)
4) realised why yining and the other peeps are so enthu about volunteer work
5) I have managed to test my patience and am amazed by my level of patience in the camp thru my bene.
6) I realised how a simple "kor kor, 谢谢" can be so satisfying and touching after all the stuff we had been through.
7) Its really AMAZING how long-lasting friendships are formed in a mere 3 days! ALL of us are madly organising outings currently! Instant click with andrew, kwanboon cynthia esther and the rest of ULTRAMAN!
8) The way the benees cared for us (when we thought that this will just be a one-way caring from us to them) was really touching. I will not forget the scene when i was pushing kangli out of the toilet and he saw that i have left my toiletries(planning to take after pushing him out) and said "kor kor 你的东西.."
9) I realised that people with any kind of disabilities are just normal people. They have their own desire (they also fall in love with others!, kangli hi-fived with me when a chio "jie jie" helped him. LOL seh pei pei tsk tsk), own thinking, strengths (im really inspired and touched by kangli's understanding, patience and kindness.) They are more similar to us than different. :) Thats one of the main objectives of ycamp challenge i guess.
10) I realised that im definitely addicted to ycamp and will be stuck with it for quite a long period of time. ;)
hereby siging off, sealing the memories of ycamp dec 09 deeply in my heart.
-dreamer :)
